Colossal Mistake: Betting Giant Fined $60K for Offensive Ads

Wagering operator Ryman Racing Pty Ltd, trading as Colossalbet, has been fined $60,000 following a conviction for publishing prohibited gambling advertisements on social media.

The penalty was handed down by a Magistrate at Downing Centre Local Court on 31 March after it was determined that the ads failed to uphold the required standards of decency, dignity, and good taste.

The breaches, which were posted by Ryman Racing's sub-brand PuntHub in October 2023, involved five separate posts across Facebook and Instagram.

Under the Betting and Racing Act 1998, gambling advertisements accessible to individuals in NSW must comply with strict regulations designed to protect the community from potential gambling harm and inappropriate content.

Bernadette Beard, Acting Executive Director of Regulatory Operations at Liquor & Gaming NSW (L&GNSW), emphasized the seriousness of the violation.

“This marks the first prosecution and conviction of a wagering operator in NSW for publishing ads that violate the standards of decency, dignity, and good taste,” Beard said.

“L&GNSW closely monitors gambling advertisements across all platforms and is committed to taking enforcement action when necessary.”

The fine underscores the importance of adhering to the strict advertising standards outlined in the Act, and Beard urged other betting providers to ensure compliance with these regulations.
